Montana’s gorgeous landmarks, state and national parks, and wide-open spaces make it a great place to embrace rural living. The state is divided into 6 distinctive regions:
North West (Glacier Country) Lincoln / Flathead / Lake / Sanders / Mineral / Missoula / Ravalli
Located in Northwest Montana, Glacier Country holds some of the most breathtaking views in the state. This region is home to Glacier National Park, which spans 1,583 square miles in the state’s Rocky Mountains. This part of the state houses some of the most untouched areas of the nation and is well known to travelers for unmatched sights, fishing, and wild game.
North Central (Russell Country) Glacier / Toole / Liberty / Pondera / Teton / Choteau / Cascade / Judith Basin / Fergus / Petroleum
Stretching across the north-central part of Montana is a vast land of rolling plains, wheat fields, and ranchlands. As it is the flattest region in Montana, it is ideal for agriculture and raising cattle. With a mild climate and abundant rivers and canals, North Central includes 295,000 acres of the Lewis and Clark National Forest, surrounded by four mountain ranges.
North East (Missouri Country) Hill / Blain / Phillips / Valley / Daniels / Sheridan / Roosevelt
Covering the northeastern part of Montana, Missouri country has many flatlands with winding rivers, badlands and open prairies. With an arid climate, fertile soil, and access to water from the Fort Peck reservoir and the Missouri River, Northeast Montana is an ideal area to raise livestock and cattle. Much of the area is undisturbed, with unique landforms and geologic wonders.
South West (Gold West Country) Powel / Lewis & Clark / Granite / Deer Lodge / Jefferson / Broadwater / Silver Bow / Beaverhead / Madison / Gallatin / Park
Situated in the southwest region of Montana between Yellowstone and Glacier national parks is the Gold West Country. With many attractions such as Buttle, the biggest city in Montana, Bannack State Park located in Dillion, and the state capital in Helena, this is the area of Montana that delivers a lot of diversity.
South Central (Cluster Country) Wheatland / Golden Valley / Musselshell / Sweet Grass / Stillwater / Yellowstone / Treasure / Carbon / Big Horn
Spanning across the South-Central region of Montana is an area filled with rolling plains, river valleys, and snowy mountains. This part of the state is known for its natural beauty and houses Yellowstone National Park. South-central Montana has four different river systems that run through it: Madison, Jefferson, Gallatin, and Yellowstone. South Central is known for having one of the best trout waters in the US. These waters also flow heavily through south central Montana, creating fertile land for agriculture and plenty of water for cattle. Billings, being the largest city in Montana, acts as an agricultural hub for the region.
South East Garfield / McCone / Richland / Dawson / Rosebud / Custer / Prairie / Wibaux / Fallon / Powder River / Carter
South East region is defined by its vast plains, rugged badlands, and deep history. This area is rich with ranches, from small cattle operations to commercial-sized ranches. The region’s semi-arid climate provides good weather for hay and wheat farming but is mainly used for livestock. The Bakken Formation is also a huge staple for this region, supplying the area with oil and gas. The southeast region of Montana holds some of the best and unique landscapes.
