Between 1800 and 1810, several families from East Tennessee who had settled in Huntsville, Alabama, traveled west on the Tennessee River. They ascended the Elk River and established a settlement near the present village of Prospect, near a stream now known as Ford’s Creek. The leader of this group was James Ford, whose name is preserved in the creek’s designation. The original settlement, referred to as “Old Prospect,” was located about a mile southwest of the current village. Thomas Abernathy Westmoreland later built a house, a church, a store, and a school on what is now the T.H. Davis farm, naming the settlement Prospect. The first Methodist meeting place, known as “The Camp Ground,” consisted of rough log structures arranged in a circle with a brush arbor, pulpit, and seating in the center.
